about

Many bands claim to be eclectic, but Xenat-Ra truly lives it. A typical Xenat-Ra performance might entail a nearly note-perfect rendition of an Old Dirty Bastard tune segueing seamlessly into a Thelonius Monk jazz classic. They might take on Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" in a version that veers from a free jazz ballad to elevator samba, then transforming to a lighters-in-the-air rock anthem. Xenat-Ra messes with tunes by John Zorn, Weather Report, King Crimson, Sun Ra, Funkadelic, Kraftwerk, and Slayer, among others, mixed in with original material that draws on all those sources and more, adding a healthy dose of free improvisation and Metz' dense and deeply layered words. Dance if you dare.

Simply entitled "Live," Xenat-Ra's new limited-edition album shows some of the breadth and depth of the band. Recorded at 3 different shows, including an early show from the original Mark France-less quartet, the material is rough, raw, and filled with energy and humor. The "Xenat-Ra Theme" lays out the band's agenda, from a murky ambient intro into a polyrhythmic groove that ultimately explodes into a massive blues riff. On "Wabi Dub," Metz lays out a surreal dreamscape over a bubbling dub groove. "Isis Travels" is an epic poem over a floating jazz-fusion groove, culminating in an epic sax solo by Calkins. "Back to Square One" is a funk blast beat improv, a lo-fi slice of life field recording.
